Garland was selected by the Chicago Cubs with the 10th pick of the 1997 amateur draft.

On Thursday, Crown demonstrated his growing value as a No. 2 pitcher, striking out nine while throwing a five-hitter to lead Kennedy past visiting Taft 7-3 in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

``He's got the golden left arm,'' Kennedy catcher David Lusk said after rubbing rubbing,

 Crown's arm for good luck.

Crown, a 16-year-old junior, didn't even pitch for Kennedy's JV team last season. But he has filled a crucial void in the Cougars' rotation this season. He has allowed just two earned runs earned run

``I think he's going to be the key to the rest of the season,'' Lusk said. ``We know Jon is going to come through. He's handling the pressure.''

Taft (9-5, 2-2) tested Crown in the late innings, closing to 4-3 on an unearned run in the sixth. But Kennedy coach Manny Manny may refer to:

Alvarado kept Crown in the game to see how he would react.

``We decided to leave him in to see if he fell apart and what his heart was like, and you saw,'' he said.

Crown finished up strongly as Kennedy improved to 12-5 overall and 4-0 in conference. The Cougars gave Crown some breathing room by scoring three runs in the sixth off Jesse Chastain (4-1), who wasn't helped by four fielding errors in the game. Kennedy's top hitter was outfielder Adrian Perez, who hit a triple and double.

, Crown simply fools them by hitting spots around the plate and throwing his curveball for strikes.

``Just throw strikes and get ahead of hitters,'' Crown said of his secret to success.

Watching Crown pitch just two days after Garland provides a vivid contrast in style but also an indication that velocity alone isn't the crucial factor in striking out batters. Garland had 10 strikeouts on Tuesday against Taft, just one more than Crown.

``At any level, even the major leagues, guys are throwing 78 and 79 mph and getting guys out,'' Kennedy pitching coach John Bushart said. ``You don't need to throw 90 mph.''

All Kennedy needs is for Crown to keep pitching well, and opposing coaches will have nightmares trying to figure out how to beat the Cougars once the playoffs come around.
