KENNEDY IS TEAM TO BEAT : WITH TRANSFERS, COUGARS HAVE EYE ON 4-A TITLE.

Valley's best chance at a City 4-A championship in the last decade - and a lot of questions about how Kennedy High School could stay within section rules while putting together a virtual all-star team.

Such is the case in Granada Hills, where the Cougars are gearing for a run at the title after All-City forwards Monia Calhoun and Vanessa Dunn transferred in with three other key teammates from a Taft team that posted a 20-1 record last season.

The 5-foot-9 Calhoun, 5-11 Dunn, 5-11 center Rosa Ortiz and guard Nancy Chacon - all seniors - and 5-10 junior forward Tammy Barber A barber (from the Latin barba, "beard") is someone whose occupation is to cut any type of hair, give shaves, and trim beards. In previous times, barbers also performed surgery and dentistry.  will join talented senior guards Tamaya Morris, Coyles Scarbrough and Akane Maruyama in an effort to win the area's first 4-A title since the Cougars took back-to-back crowns in 1986 and '87.

``When I heard they were coming, that's when I knew we were really going to do it,'' said Scarbrough, an All-West Valley League choice last season after averaging 12.3 points.

That's a lot of pressure to heap on a team that was only 13-12 last season, even with a veteran coach and a roster filled with seniors.

``I don't mind the pressure,'' said Donis DONIS, STATUTE DE. The stat. West. 2, namely, 13 Edw. I. , c. 1, called the statute de donis conditionalibus. This statute revives, in some sort, the ancient feudal restraints, which were originally laid on alienations. 2 Bl. If I screw screw, simple machine consisting essentially of a solid cylinder, usually of metal, around which an inclined plane winds spirally, either clockwise or counterclockwise.  this one up, you need to pack me off to the graveyard.''

However, the season hasn't even started and Kennedy has already had to deal with scrutiny and pressure.

Taft administrators contacted Kennedy officials, concerned with the circumstances CIRCUMSTANCES, evidence. The particulars which accompany a fact.

Born in Sacramento, California, Brian Lewis played baseball (his father and uncle had played professional baseball) through his ninth grade, but

Taft officials believed that Lewis was trying to convince players to follow him to Kennedy, although he has not been allowed to serve as Bailey's assistant.

``You'd have to be naive naive - Untutored in the perversities of some particular program or system; one who still tries to do things in an intuitive way, rather than the right way (in really good designs these coincide, but most designs aren't "really good" in the appropriate sense).  to think that many top-caliber players and a coach could move together to another school and eyebrows wouldn't be raised,'' Taft athletic director Athletic director (commonly, "athletics director") is a position at many American colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, which oversees the work of the coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic  Jim Woodard said.

The problems haven't ended there.

Calhoun, who earned Daily News All-Area honors after averaging 15.6 points, 9.1 rebounds and 5.4 assists as a junior at Taft, may not begin the season in uniform.

Calhoun's residential transfer has been challenged, leaving her eligible to practice but not play in games until she can prove that she lives with her father in the Valley.

``It's just been a whole bunch of problems,'' Calhoun said. ``They say we have to prove my dad has moved out there, but he's been in the hospital so we can't prove it.''

Barber, Taft's top reserve last season, also came to Kennedy as a residential transfer, while the other three transferred under open-enrollment rules. None of the other transfers have been officially challenged.

With seven of their top eight players seniors, few doubt that the Cougars have the talent and experience to topple longtime long·time

. An early opportunity will come Saturday, when Kennedy begins play in the Washington tournament, where the Cougars could see defending division-champion Washington in the final.

``That's a lot of talent,'' Chatsworth coach Emad Whitney said of the Cougars. ``They are going to be very tough to beat.''

Said Woodard: ``I think you would have to consider them the odds-on favorite to win the City championship.''

And Kennedy isn't backing down from the challenge.

``That's not pressure,'' said Dunn, a two-time All-City selection who averaged 18.5 points and 10.2 rebounds last season. ``It's exciting to be part of a team with so much talent.''

A preview was provided last summer, when Morris, a 14-point scorer last season, combined with Scarbrough, Dunn and Calhoun in the Just Say No tournament and advanced to the semifinals.

``This is the most talent I've ever had here,'' said Bailey, who served as an assistant during Kennedy's 1980s dominance that included 140 consecutive league victories.
