night in a Valley Mission League game at Kennedy, Sylmar failed to answer the call going for No. 70.

David Contreras' 36 yard field goal attempt into a stiff wind in the closing minutes fell about five yards short, enabling Kennedy to post a 21-20 victory over the Spartans Spartans

It was Contreras' second unsuccessful kick. In the third quarter, he missed an extra point when his kick sailed wide right.

``Kennedy's coaches did a great job of preparing their team offensively,'' Sylmar coach Jeff Engilman said. ``It's just time for us to start another winning streak Noun 1. winning streak - a streak of wins

, that's all.''

Kennedy made it clear early that Sylmar would be tested quickly. The Cougars (5-3, 2-1) pieced together an impressive drive in the first quarter to set the tone. Sanders San´ders

Trent caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Ruben Zaragoza to give Kennedy a 7-0 lead.

Trent's reception capped a 19-play drive that included three successful conversions on fourth down.

Sylmar (5-3, 2-1) quickly countered with a score of its own as it marched 80 yards in eight plays. Spartan quarterback John Valdez scored on a 1 yard run to tie it.

From then on though, Kennedy excelled while Sylmar sputtered.

``Hey we made too many mistakes and they didn't make enough,'' Engilman said. ``We lost to a good football team.''

Kennedy's defense bottled up Sylmar's offense, as it held the high flying Spartans well below its average of 30 plus-points per game in City Section play.

``How bout that,'' Bob Francola said of his defense.

Hector Arrieta was among several Cougars in Valdez's face for much of the evening.

``This is a huge win for us,'' Miles said. ``But you know what, I don't think Sylmar was prepared for us.''
