KEMPER ELECTS LEWIS NATIONAL DIRECTOR

 LONG GROVE, Ill., May 25 /PRNewswire/ -- George R. Lewis, 52, vice president and treasurer of the Philip Morris Companies Inc., today was elected to the boards of directors of the Kemper National Insurance Companies.
 He replaces John Stetson, 72, president of J.C. Stetson, Inc., of Lake Bluff, Ill., who is retiring after 17 years of service to the Kemper boards. Stetson, former president of A.B. Dick Co. and one-time secretary of the U.S. Air Force, serves on numerous corporate and civic boards.
 "We thank John for his wise counsel over the years -- and we are fortunate to have an experienced financial executive like George to take his place," said Gerald L. Maatman, Kemper National chairman and chief executive officer.
 Lewis worked for W.R. Grace and General Foods Corp. before joining Philip Morris in 1967 as a corporate analyst. He subsequently worked as a senior planning analyst, becoming manager of financial relations in 1970. He became assistant treasurer of Philip Morris Incorporated in 1973. He was named vice president, financial and planning, and treasurer of Philip Morris Industrial in 1975.
 In 1982 he was named vice president of finance of The Seven-Up Company, a former Philip Morris subsidiary. In 1984 he was named vice president and treasurer of Philip Morris.
 Lewis serves on the board of the Central Fidelity Bank in Richmond, Va., the Business Consortium Fund and the National Urban League. He also serves on the corporate advisory board of the National Bankers Association, the board of trustees of Hampton University and the New York City Controller's Debt Advisory Council.
 He has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the outstanding Twenty-Year Alumnus Award from Hampton University and the Arthur A. Loftus Achievement Award in Finance from Iona College.
 Lewis earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from Hampton (Va.) University and a master's degree in finance from Iona College, New Rochelle, N.Y.
 Lewis and his wife live in Stamford, Conn. They have two daughters.
 Kemper National Insurance Companies, with 1992 sales of $3.1 billion, operates in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and many foreign markets.
