KELSEY-HAYES INTRODUCES EXPANDED LINE OF INNOVATIVE ABS
 AT MONDIAL DE L'AUTOMOBILE
PARIS, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The Kelsey-Hayes Group unveiled its expanded EBC(TM) 10 family of innovative anti-lock braking systems (ABS) at the Mondial de l'Automobile this week. The new family, which includes the EBC 10, 15 and 20, will be available for the European, Asian and North American markets starting with the 1995 model year.
Smaller, Lighter, Less Expensive: With No Compromise on Performance
The new four-wheel systems, which are the latest generation of the successful Kelsey-Hayes line of ABS, are lighter, significantly smaller and more cost-effective than competitive systems. The new ABS family is compatible with virtually any passenger car or light truck, and works with any front, rear or all-wheel-drive vehicle.
"We've expanded our EBC 10 family of ABS to meet the automotive industry's increasing needs for smaller, lighter weight, more flexible, less expensive ABS for applications ranging from small mini-cars to light trucks and vans," said Ed Gulda, group president of the company's Worldwide ABS and Controls Group. "EBC 10, 15 and 20 offer the same high performance in steerability, stopping distance, and stability as any of the larger, bulkier systems available today -- at a significantly lower price."
 EBC 10 Family Product Features
The first system in the ABS family, EBC 10, was introduced during the Tokyo Motor Show last fall. EBC 10 weighs less than 4.5 kilograms and takes up approximately 3,000 cubic centimeters' space under the hood. EBC 10 is available in three- and four-channel versions, designated EBC 310 and EBC 410, and is designed for light-duty truck and van applications. The three-channel system was created for six-valve vertical (front-rear) split braking applications and the four-channel system was created for eight-valve diagonal split applications.
EBC 15 and 20, introduced at Mondial de l'Automobile today, are smaller, lighter versions of EBC 10. EBC 15 is about 20 percent smaller than the 10 series, and is designed specifically for passenger car applications. It is available in three- and four-channel versions, EBC 315 and EBC 415. EBC 20 is the lightest in the new series of ABS, weighing in at about half the size of the 10 series. EBC 20, which is designed for small subcompact and mini-cars, is available in a four- channel diagonal split system, called the EBC 420.
Other features of the EBC 10, 15 and 20 family of products include:
-- About half the parts of traditional ABS, for easier assembly, ease of maintenance and fewer potential part failures.
-- Designed for simple upgrades to traction control.
-- Adaptability to handle fluid compression rates for applications ranging from small mini-cars to light-duty trucks and vans.
-- Integral electronics that are compact, easy to install and service.
Two European Automakers to Use New ABS
The EBC 10 family of products is currently being tested on vehicle applications worldwide, and will be available for the 1995 model year. Earlier this year, Kelsey-Hayes announced that it will supply its new generation ABS to two major European automakers beginning with 1995 and 1996 model-year passenger cars.
As the international leader in ABS production, Kelsey-Hayes manufactures more than half of all two- and four-wheel ABS brake systems on the road today. The company has produced more than 15 million units since 1986 -- nearly twice as many as its nearest competitor.
Kelsey-Hayes is a major supplier of conventional brakes, anti-lock brake systems, electrical control devices and steel and aluminum wheels to the automotive industry worldwide. Kelsey-Hayes is a business of Varity Corporation (NYSE: VAT).
