KEEPING DREAM ALIVE; LANCASTER EVENT CELEBRATES KING.Byline: Daily News Elementary, middle and high school students read their winning essays Monday in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. essay contest at the city's 10th annual celebration honoring the civil rights leader. The essay contests asked kids in third grade through high school to reflect on how King's work has played a role in their lives. Brian Brooks Mariposa School, Fifth grade I try to live my life being the best that I can be. Like Dr. Martin Luther King, I feel that helping, and being a good friend is the best way to get along in life. In school I volunteered to be a Peer Tutor A peer tutor is anyone who is of a similar status as the person being tutored. In an undergraduate institution this would usually be other undergraduates, as distinct from the graduate students who may be teaching the writing classes. . In this way, I get to help a child who has trouble in reading, learn how to read better, and feel good about himself. This makes me feel really good about myself. When kids in my own class need me to help them, I am more than happy to try to help them with their problem. At home I help my mom and dad with whatever needs to be done around the house without complaining because I know they need help. Martin Luther King's words would make the world a better place to live in, if people would try to live by them every day. Kelly Routolo Piute Middle School, Eighth grade ``If I can help somebody as I pass along, if I can cheer somebody up with a word or song, if I can show somebody how he's traveling wrong, then my life will not be in vain vain adj. vain·er, vain·est 1. Not yielding the desired outcome; fruitless: a vain attempt. 2. Lacking substance or worth: vain talk. 3. .'' In this wonderful quote by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I have understood what he meant when I helped a little girl. By me helping this girl I have changed her life for the better. It was an opportunity to help her, and she gave me a chance to feel proud for doing something for another person. It all started as I got off track from school. I decided to do Piute S.T.A.R.S. (Students Teaching and Reaching Students) while I was on my break from school. On my first day, I was assigned as·sign tr.v. as·signed, as·sign·ing, as·signs 1. As I looked through the classroom I thought I was going to do nothing but grade papers. Then Ms. Steinaway tells me about this little girl who was having a lot of trouble. So, as I was told to do, I went to the girl and told her I would be helping her for the short period of time that I would be there. Jessica, the little girl, was very shy and didn't talk much. The first day she didn't do much, but as I talked with her she began to open up more. I could tell how she felt because I was like her too for awhile a·while adv. For a short time. Usage Note: Awhile, an adverb, is never preceded by a preposition such as for, but the two-word form a while may be preceded by a preposition. . Eventually, after a few days she started to do her work and I started teaching her with the subject that she had trouble with the most. After a few more days later, I noticed that she was improving. I guess from all the compliments com·pli·ment n. 1. An expression of praise, admiration, or congratulation. 2. A formal act of civility, courtesy, or respect. 3. I gave her in the beginning she started to get some self-esteem. I felt so proud for her for what she had accomplished and proud of myself for doing something right for someone else. Jessica was so excited because she had accomplished something for the first time ever in her short life. Ms. Steinaway was very impressed im·press 1 tr.v. im·pressed, im·press·ing, im·press·es 1. I have improved the way she does her work now for the better. Hopefully she will continue this in the future. I hope everyone will understand what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was saying in one of his famous quotes and try to make a difference in somebody else's life. ``Make a career of humanity!'' In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to make a career of humanity is definitely a goal I want to achieve. Imagine this, you are able to walk up to a person who has no respect for your race and become friends and feel good about yourself because you have succeeded in making humanity a career. Imagine you were able to touch a heart just like Dr. King wanted to touch the lives of others with love no matter what race they are. I have chosen a career path that will help me to become a better person in life and show my nation that ``I Am Somebody!'' I have given back to the community by following Dr. King's message that you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it and never give up on doing what you think is right for yourself as well as your people. In adherence adherence /ad·her·ence/ (ad-her´ens) the act or condition of sticking to something. immune adherence to Dr. King's message, I volunteer at a local nursing care center for the elderly. Being at an elderly shelter makes me feel a sense of love and emotion from people who are usually rejected from their family because of an illness or because of their age. I work in my local church by sharing the gift of God with others; I help children in my church and hope they will see me as a role model of someone who is trying to make a difference in my community. The power and love of Dr. King's words and actions has brought others and me a sense of racial equality. When I achieve my goal of becoming a lawyer, I will always look back to the quote ``no justice, no peace.'' I want to reach out and touch as many lives as I can and give back to my nation with not just my mind, but with money to help those that are in need. In order to do this I have to first start with myself and say, ``How many people can I help today?'' How many lives can I touch with the love and respect Dr. King wanted to express so openly? Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has instilled in me the importance of helping your community, achieving the goal of making a career of humanity, and making a greater nation with your knowledge. I have tried my hardest to help my community and make a career of humanity by looking into the heart of another race and knowing I can love them as Dr. King loved his people.
