Just once, I'd like to wake up on the first day of the NHL NHL Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, see there season to read the Kings or Ducks - it's too much to ask for both - hailed from coast to coast as a powerhouse primed to win on opening night and never stop winning until they're skating around the rink with the engravers' handiwork overhead. Instead, as the Ducks opened Wednesday night in Dallas and the Kings open tonight in Detroit, it looks as if we're skating over familiar ice. The Kings, out of the playoffs last season after injuries forced them to rush their prospects, find themselves hoping a hot goalie, one or two medical miracles and some corner-to-corner grit will sneak them into the conference's top eight. Do these guys have another round of magic in them? Don't you wish it didn't always come down to that? The past six times the Kings made the playoffs, they've had to hustle after slipping under .500 in the second half of the season. I asked Bob Miller, the Kings' great play-by-play man, when the last time was that the team went into a season expected to be a conference-title contender. ``I'd say going into the '75-76 season ...'' Miller began, going back a little farther than I was expecting. In 1974-75, the Kings had piled up 105 points in the regular season - that's still a franchise high - and added Marcel Dionne in the summer. But injuries and a weaker defense in '75-76 sent them tumbling. There was, of course, the Kings' much-anticipated season after their 1992-93 trip to the Finals against Montreal. ``Your feeling (was that) everything's in place, we're going to be strong here,'' Miller said. ``I remember thinking that coming home tied 1-1 with Montreal: `Hey, we're a solid team.' Not knowing the owner (Bruce McNall) was going bankrupt.'' After losing to the Canadiens in five games, the Kings didn't get back to the playoffs for five years. ``I don't think we've ever had the feeling they get in Detroit and Colorado, that we're going to compete for the cup unless we mess it up,'' Miller said. The Ducks could be as good as they were in the playoffs, having gotten Sergei Federov to replace Kariya. But remember they only just made it into the playoffs, and chemistry like last spring's can be fleeting. The Kings should be better than they were, with new goalie Roman Cechmanek and improved depth. But Jason Allison and Adam Deadmarsh have to get healthy fast. Kings coach Andy Murray speaks optimistically about how, when Allison and Deadmarsh return to action, ``it will be like adding some free agents part-way through the year.'' But he's the only one with such a sunny view. Everyone else plays wait-and-see. Injury talk. NHL-labor-trouble talk. All-Kobe-all-the-time on the news shows. It's a tough time to bring a new hockey season to town. You want a reason to watch from opening night. Instead, you're counting on magic again. CAPTION(S): box Box: KINGS vs. DETROIT - Matt McHale |
