KEARIN NOT `DESPERATE,' JUST TRYING TO SAVE FOOTBALL.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

Cal State Northridge coach Jeff Kearin is working on a game plan to save football.

Kearin said he's writing a report, which he will present to president Jolene Koester Jolene Koester is the president of California State University, Northridge. The California State University Board of Trustees announced her appointment as president on November 16, 1999, and she took office as the fourth president of the University on July 1, 2000.  sometime this week, outlining a way to keep football as well as balance the budget.

CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  athletic director Dick Dull was asked by Koester over the summer to write a report to balance the budget, estimated at $725,000 this year. In Dull's report Oct. 1, he recommended Koester eliminate football.

Kearin declined to discuss specifics of the plan but said it addresses the issues of gender equity, opportunities and the budget.

``What we're trying to do is create a situation where football and probably both men's and women's basketball are bringing in the revenue they should for the size of this university competing at the level we compete at,'' he said.

Koester said she'll make a decision by Thanksgiving, which is Nov. 22, but she is expected to make it after CSUN's last game against Portland State on Nov. 17.

--More meetings: In an effort to save football, community activist Duke Russell is organizing groups to go to the L.A. City Council meeting at 10 a.m. on Nov. 6. --Abercrombie out: Senior linebacker Cos Abercrombie traveled but didn't play in CSUN's 63-35 loss to Eastern Washington on Saturday. Abercrombie has played sparingly since he had surgery to remove the meniscus meniscus /me·nis·cus/ (me-nis´kus) pl. menis´ci   [L.] something of crescent shape, as the concave or convex surface of a column of liquid in a pipet or buret, or a crescent-shaped cartilage in the knee joint.  in his knee.

Kearin said he doesn't expect Abercrombie to play this Saturday either.

--Home sweet home: CSUN (1-6) will play its final home game - perhaps in the history of the program - against Sacramento State on Saturday at North Campus Stadium. It's one of just two CSUN home games this season. The Matadors' lone win this year - a 47-37 victory over Western Oregon - was at North Campus Stadium.
