KCI Delivers Pressure Ulcer Prevention Program to Help Hospitals Comply With New Medicare Ruling.

SAN ANTONIO -- Kinetic Concepts, Inc. (NYSE:KCI), a leading global advanced wound care and therapeutic surfaces company, provides a unique prevention program designed to help facilities address new Medicare guidelines regarding hospital-acquired pressure ulcers. KCI's unique program addresses prevalence and incidence (P&I) of hospital-acquired pressure ulcers among a facility's patient population, which are two key measurements for wound care treatment protocols. Additional components of this program include patient assessment and documentation, plus online educational programs (www.kci1.com) to increase awareness and compliance as well as optimize patient care and enhance reimbursement.

Prevalence measures the number of patients with a pressure ulcer on a given day, while incidence measures the number of patients who develop a pressure ulcer after admission. KCI's unique program measures both prevalence and incidence, which is particularly valuable now that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have announced that treatment of hospital-acquired pressure ulcers will no longer be reimbursed. This policy change will eliminate reimbursement for the treatment of what are now considered "conditions that could reasonably have been prevented."
