KBV Awards QlikTech Largest German Business Intelligence Project Ever; QlikTech, Intel, Microsoft and HP Collaborate to Deliver Revolutionary Solution Specifically Designed for 64 Bit Architecture.

DUESSELDORF, Germany -- Intel and QlikTech today announced the Kassenarztliche Bundesvereinigung (KBV) has selected QlikView running on the 64-bit Intel(R) Itanium(R) 2 processor platform to simplify analysis for the implementation of recent German government health care reforms. The QlikTech, Intel, Microsoft and HP team collaborated to win the KBV's business over traditional legacy business intelligence solutions. At the end of their evaluation the KBV concluded that the 64-bit version of QlikView running on the Intel(R) Itanium(R) 2 processor platform was the only solution capable of analyzing the required 15 to 20 terabytes of data without the use of a data warehouse.

Recent health care reforms in Germany require the KBV and other associations of physicians to provide their association members with both summary key performance indicators and record level detail of patient outcomes. In the past, technical limitations restricted the analysis to summary metrics for groups of doctors. The law now requires the KBV to analyze anonymous patient outcome data quarterly, by individual case, patient and diagnosis.

These new requirements forced the KBV Accounting Department to find a business analysis solution able to process data volumes as large as 15 to 20 terabytes. Three suppliers took part in a technical feasibility study, and the KBV decided in favor of the project team at QlikTech. "Everything spoke clearly in favor of the project team at QlikTech: in the proof-of-concept we saw that this solution would allow us to quickly and easily analyze a data volume of even 15 to 20 terabytes across two billion records. There is simply no other supplier or system that could even come close to handling these large data volumes," said Eva Obermeyer, head of the KBV Accounting Department, explaining the reason for their decision.

In tight cooperation, QlikTech, HP Germany and the HP Distributor, Computer Center, were able to deliver and install the first test QlikView analysis application in one day. This application analyzed approximately 300 million records from four German physicians' associations.

QlikView's enormous analytic processing capacity would not be possible without 64-bit technology developed by Intel. 64-bit technology eliminates the 4 gigabyte addressable memory limitation previously imposed by 32-bit architectures. "A company's operating data is its most important capital and the success of the company rises and falls with its ability to manage, analyze and process the rapidly increasing amount of information," explained Adam Martin, Enterprise Marketing Manager, at Intel EMEA. "The combination of the 64-bit Intel processor platform and the QlikTech's QlikView solution presents a new frontier in price/performance tradeoff for business analysis. QlikTech recognized the demand for this new technology early and thus is the first, and most compelling, solution in business intelligence on both Intel-based 64-bit platforms."

QlikView is able to analyze massive amounts of data at unprecedented speed by loading data directly into memory. By taking full advantage of 64-bit technology's memory capacity QlikView can provide summary level metrics and record level detail on the same architecture. The KBV project management decided to base the KBV BI solution on a future-proof platform. They selected the HP Itanium platform Integrity with the 64-bit Microsoft Windows for Itanium: "The Microsoft Windows environment is perfectly tuned to the Intel(R) Itanium(R) 2, and thanks to the high value for money of the HP Integrity Server, it contributes to the greater cost-effectiveness of the overall solution," said Thomas Breig, Sales Manager Healthcare, HP Germany.

"Customers such as KBV confirmed that our decision to support 64-bit technology was the right one. With this technology we achieve a unique market position which we will leverage increasingly to become BI market leader in the health care sector," explains Markus Roithmeier, managing director at QlikTech Deutschland GmbH, the future company objectives. The 64-bit version of QlikView has been available since mid-2004.

At the present time, the QlikView solution is being used in the central KBV office and in the regional office in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. "If the system is accepted as well in the other regional offices as it has been here, then it could very well be expanded to all 17 regional offices in Germany," said Obermeyer.

The KBV Accounting Department is now planning to use QlikView to create a number of different business analysis applications for the individual departments and regional offices. Since the implementation of QlikView, the following applications have been or are being developed: a pharmaceutical database, a USE simulation to simulate a Uniform Standard of Evaluation, a SBV application to analyze the Standard Benefit Volume and a GIS-based (Geographical Information System) information system for the German Physicians' Registry.
