The announcement comes less than a year after KB and AEG had announced the deal and is the latest wrinkle in the city's effort to get a new major hotel near the Convention Center.

``KB Home is withdrawing in order to focus on its core business of building single- and multifamily homes,'' said Jeff Gault n. 1. (Geol.) A series of beds of clay and marl in the South of England, between the upper and lower greensand of the Cretaceous period. , president of KB Urban.

AEG spokesman Michael Roth Michael Roth (born February 15, 1962) is a former West German handball player who competed in the 1984 Summer Olympics.

He was a member of the West German handball team which won the silver medal. He played two matches and scored two goals.
said it was a mutual decision reached by the two firms.

``Our commitment to the development of l.a. live has never been stronger or more focused,'' AEG President Timothy Leiweke said.

``The creation of this ... is critically important to our city, our Convention Center and to all of our partners in the development, which continues to remain on schedule to open beginning next fall.''

Plans call for the 4 million-square-foot entertainment-commercial complex, located across from Staples, to include 224 condominium units, an 878-room hotel operated by JW Marriott and a 123-room luxury hotel connected with Ritz-Carlton.

Originally, hotelier Lew Wolff was involved but dropped out quickly, prompting the company owned by Denver billionaire Philip Anschutz Philip Frederick Anschutz (born 28 December 1939 in Russell, Kansas) is an American businessman and supporter of Christian causes. With an estimated current net worth of around $7.8 billion, he is ranked by Forbes as the 31st richest person in the USA.  to launch what became an eight-month search for a new partner.

KB signed on to the project in January, and the Marriott and Ritz-Carlton labels were announced in June.

Construction is estimated to cost more than $750 million, part of which will be offset by $300 million in public financing through a loan, tax breaks and fee waivers.

Jack Kyser, chief economist for the Los Angeles Economic Development Corp., said the slowdown in the housing market had an impact on KB Homes' operation.

``A lot of people have been expecting this, given the downturn in the housing market and the strain that was putting on finances,'' Kyser said.

``The good news is that AEG is able to step up and take over the whole thing. We dodged a bullet.''

Kyser said demand for the hotel remains high because most existing facilities are at capacity and more beds are needed to accommodate tourists and conventions.

``The city is at the bursting point when it comes to available hotel rooms,'' Kyser said. ``It is imperative this hotel be built to meet the demand.''

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said he was pleased that AEG stepped forward.

``It's full speed ahead,'' Villaraigosa said in a statement. ``KB's decision will not alter the schedule of progress of the hotel in any way, shape or form.''

Councilwoman Jan Perry called KB's withdrawal ``a small bump in the road.''

``I have confidence in AEG pulling this off, so I'm not really worried about it,'' Perry said. ``I don't think this will be a setback in any way.''
