KATHY SILVERTON.Byline: - Jacqueline Etcheverry Just over a year ago, Kathy Silverton's daughter had to write about a current event for school. She chose an article about hospitals with no money for baby blankets or clothing to send newborns home in - and it touched her mother's heart. Silverton began knitting knitting, construction of a fabric made of interlocking loops of yarn by means of needles. Knitting, allied in origin to weaving and to the netting and knotting of fishnets and snares, was apparently unknown in Europe before the 15th cent. booties, blankets and hats for these hospitals. Soon, word spread of her efforts, and her crafty friends joined in. And so, Stitches From the Heart was born. The once-small group snowballed, and it's now become an organization of more than 850 women in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California.
