After six years of teaching karate in Santa Clarita, Eric and Nicole Frank noticed that most of their students were from families that could afford to enroll their children in several sports throughout the year, and they wondered about the kids who couldn't even afford to play one sport. ``We decided to do something with the community center to allow kids who can't afford it to have the opportunity to take karate lessons,'' said Twin Dragons program director Nicole Frank. They come to the center dressed in their karate outfits and ready to go,'' Horner said. ``They not only learn karate, but Eric bases belt promotion on whether they are doing their homework and behaving at home, so it's a really well-rounded program. ``You can tell that Eric loves the kids by the way he works with them,'' she said. ``Eric is gifted with teaching when it comes to children,'' said his wife. ``He is very charismatic. He has this electricity that just lights up the kids' faces.'' In order to provide other low-income kids with a chance to take karate lessons, Twin Dragons has also started a Santa Clarita Sweep program in which kids can apply at the community center to see whether they qualify for low-cost classes at the studio.
