Among the many attributes of the city of Lancaster The City of Lancaster (2002 population: 133,914) is a local government district with city status in Lancashire, England. Its main town is Lancaster, from which it obtained its city status. Other towns in the district include Morecambe, Heysham, Slyne, and Carnforth. , suggests the local film commission, is that it doesn't necessarily have to look like the city of Lancaster.

``We tell producers that you can shoot everything from L.A. to Kansas in Lancaster,'' said Pauline East, film liaison for the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

``Kansas doubled for Hawaii in the backyard garden of a woman in Topeka,'' said film commission manager Vicky Henley, recalling a mini-series shot there. ``It was a very short scene.''

The competition was fierce but friendly at the Locations '99 show, where hundreds of film commissioners, from the Philippines to Fresno, made their cases that they could provide the best place on Earth to shoot that movie, TV show, commercial or music video.

Various state agencies and commissions took up 15 percent of the 330 booths at the trade show, but city and county agencies in Los Angeles weren't among them. A local spokesman said the event is not a cost-effective means of marketing for Los Angeles.

Over the past decade, film offices have blossomed around the world to get in on the booming entertainment action. It's more than the glamour. Location shooting can pump tens of millions of dollars into a local economy, providing jobs for trades people and filling up the hotels and restaurants.

Canada has been particularly successful, luring Hollywood productions north with aggressive promotion, tax credits of more than 20 percent and a favorable fa·vor·a·ble

Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  desert city not far from Lancaster, the local film commission doesn't hide the fact that one of the things the city is known for is being out in the middle of nowhere.
