KAISER ALUMINUM, LAROCHE CHEMICALS ENTER WORLDWIDE JOINT VENTURE IN ALUMINA TRIHYDRATE BUSINESS

GRAMERCY, La., Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp. (KACC) and LaRoche Chemicals Inc. (LCI) announced today the formation of a worldwide joint venture in the alumina trihydrate business.
The new venture, named Kaiser LaRoche Hydrate Partners, brings KACC and LCI together to capitalize on long-term growth opportunities in the hydrate business.
LCI is a producer of specialty aluminas, chlor-alkali, and refrigerants, and currently markets hydrate that is produced at KACC's alumina refinery in Gramercy.
KACC is the world's second largest producer-seller of metallurgical grade alumina with facilities in Louisiana, Jamaica, and Australia. A significant part of Gramercy's capacity has been dedicated to the alumina trihydrate market and will be further developed as a premier source for the chemical grade alumina market.
Spokesmen for KACC and LCI said, "The new joint venture has been designed to facilitate growth into international markets and greater involvement by both partners to improve quality to meet customer needs."
The venture will continue to focus its marketing efforts for alumina trihydrate on companies which produce flame retardants, catalysts, zeolites, aluminum sulfate, sodium aluminate, and other specialty chemicals.
KACC is the operating subsidiary of Kaiser Aluminum Corp. (NYSE: KLU), which is 87.2 percent owned by Houston-based MAXXAM Inc. (AMEX: MXM). LCI is a subsidiary of LaRoche Holdings Inc., which is headquartered in Atlanta.
