Just right."Wake up, wake up!" Little Bear shouted outside Big Bear's dark forest cave. Big Bear yawned and wiped the sleep from his eyes. He lumbered into the sunshine. "Mmmm," he sniffed. "What is that wonderful smell?" "The air is sweet with summer blackberries," said Little Bear. "And Timber Grove has the juiciest blackberries around. Look, I brought my basket! Do you want to pick berries with me?" Big Bear smacked his lips. "Yes, indeed," he said happily. He rubbed his big, furry belly and roared, "On to Timber Grove!" Big Bear bounded into the forest. He brushed past tall trees and leafy bushes. He climbed up and over the high hillside. "Wait for me! Wait for me!" Little Bear cried, climbing after him. Little Bear stumbled over rocks and stones as he" scrambled up the bumpy hill. Big Bear looked down from the hilltop. "Little Bear, you are just too little to keep up," he called. "I cannot wait for you!" Big Bear ran ahead. He plodded over rocky trails and rickety bridges. He waded through a wide, bubbling stream. "Wait for me! Wait for me!" Little Bear cried, splashing far behind him. The cool water reached up to his underbelly, soaking Little Bear's furry body. He shivered as he sloshed through the stream. Big Bear looked back at the stream's edge. "Little Bear, you are just too little to keep up!" he called. "I cannot wait for you!" Big Bear plunged ahead. He charged down woodland paths and grassy slopes. He shoved his way through thick forest shrubs. "Wait for me! Wait for me!" Little Bear cried, pushing through the hedge. The prickly evergreens scratched Little Bear as he slapped away the branches. Big Bear looked back over the hedge. "Little Bear, you are just too little!" Then Big Bear smelled the sweet scent of blackberries. Timber Grove was just around the bend! Big Bear ran as fast as his huge legs would carry him. He did not see the fence until it was too late. CRASH! "Oooh!" Big Bear groaned, rubbing his big, bruised nose. "How will I get those sweet blackberries now?" Little Bear caught up, huffing and puffing. "Look, Big Bear! There is a hole in the fence!" Big Bear tried to squeeze through the small hole. It was no use. "This hole is too little," he said glumly. "Maybe you are just too big," said Little Bear. He bounded over to the hole and popped right through to the other side. Little Bear wasted no time sampling the new crop of summer berries. "Mmmm, these are scrumptious!" he said, smacking his lips. Big Bear turned to leave. "Enjoy your blackberries, Little Bear," he said sadly. "Do not go," said Little Bear. "When my basket is full, there will be more than enough for two hungry bears." Big Bear watched as Little Bear filled the basket with plump, juicy berries. When the basket could hold no more, Little Bear joined Big Bear on the other side. Big Bear smiled. "Little Bear," he said, "I am lucky to have a friend like you. You are not too little. And you are not too big. You are just right." |
