An unidentified Arkansas

Arkansas, state, United States

Arkansas (är`kənsô', ärkăn`zŭs), state in the south-central United States. It is bordered by Tennessee and Mississippi, across the Mississippi R.
man was attacked by five young men in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, early on the morning of Sunday, April 3, and was forced to shoot one of his attackers, killing him.

The dead man, Kendell Moss of Racine, Wisconsin, and tour teenagers were joyriding in a family van looking for a place to eat when the van broke down. According to the April 5 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the group hailed a taxi and learned that it would cost $60 to get back to Racine.

Then, the young men ran to a nearby gas station where a 64-year-old Arkansas man had stopped to ask for directions. The youths began beating the Arkansas man to get money. The youths, of course, deny trying to rob the man--they say Moss merely got into a dispute with the beating victim--but an eyewitness says that all of the youths ran toward the Arkansas man's vehicle, and one of the juveniles quoted the beating victim as saying, "I don't have no money. I'm sick and just got out of the hospital."

The Arkansas man was kicked and beaten with his cane before he reached under his driver's seat, retrieved a pistol, and shot Moss in the head.

When Moss was shot, the juveniles initially fled, but they soon returned. One of the juveniles called 911 on a cell phone and then, apparently, began to look for a gun with which to shoot the Arkansas man. The youth yelled to a bystander, "Hey, Hey! You got a cannon so I can air him out?"

No charges will be filed against the Arkansas man because he acted in self-defense. Charges, including possible charges of felony murder, are pending against the juveniles. At least three of the juveniles have prior criminal records.
