Jury finds for Cadence in patent suit: mentor to challenge rulings. (Design).


SAN FRANCISCO -- A federal jury found three Mentor Graphics patents invalid in the company's patent infringement suit against Cadence Design Systems (company) Cadence Design Systems - A company that sells electronic design automation software and services.

Mentor claimed that Quickturn, a subsidiary of Cadence, violated six Mentor patents with its Mercury and MercuryPlus emulation systems. U.S. District Court Judge Susan Illston found three other Mentor patents invalid during pre-trial hearings last year. Earlier, the court also dismissed a breach of confidence claim brought by Mentor against Cadence.

"We are disappointed with the court and the jury's findings," said Dean Freed, general counsel at Mentor Graphics. "In particular, we respectfully disagree with the court's finding of invalidity on the first three patents as well as the jury's verdict on the latter three patents which we think resulted from claim constructions that we will challenge on appeal. We will review our options in this case and consider our next steps.
