"US cable operators will have to combine price cuts and better marketing efforts to forestall this outcome." In Western Europe DSL will retain its already dominant position over cable modems. JupiterResearch forecasts that by 2011, 88.9 million out of the 110 million total broadband households will be utilizing DSL.

At the end of 2005, 36 percent of US households connected to the Internet via broadband, and while the US will experience a strong increase up to 65 percent by 2011, the US market will continue to lag behind many Western European countries, where far lower broadband prices will drive higher penetration rates. The average European household will generate 54 percent less broadband access revenue in 2011 compared with 2005.

"The hope of European telecom incumbents that new revenues from broadband will compensate for declining traditional fixed voice revenues will not be met through broadband access alone," said Ian Fogg, Senior Analyst at JupiterResearch and lead author of the European Broadband Forecast. "Broadband Internet See broadband.  service providers must control their costs as they look to new revenue sources enabled by widespread broadband adoption."
