, senior analyst for Jupiter's Consumer Content Strategies practice, will host the event, with opening remarks exploring Hollywood's redirected efforts online. "The Internet is unique in that it provides both a medium and a channel for entertainment," explained Card. "Online entertainment programming, where show hosts broadcast and take feedback from their viewers to adjust their mix, or run video talk shows with remote audience participation, are good uses of the medium. Streaming long-form video is not."

Jupiter has covered the entertainment field through its various research products for several years, and has ongoing research examining a range of issues affecting this industry. Some related research includes:

Access: Jupiter forecasts that 15.3 million US homes will have broadband by 2003, however penetration among today's households is much less. Entertainment companies must evaluate how they will compete now in the narrowband world of 43 million households, rather than focus all of their efforts on a market that is still a few years out.

Media Consumption: In a recent Jupiter survey, 42 percent of consumers reported that their time viewing TV has decreased due to use of the Internet. An opportunity exists, however, for offering parallel programming to the growing number of individuals-currently 53 percent-who report that they are both online and viewing TV at the same time.

Paid Content: Today, there is a nearly a $450 million market for paid content, which is expected to rise to $1.3 billion by 2003, but a recent Jupiter consumer survey found that less than 25 percent of consumers have purchased content online and an additional 46 percent said they wouldn't purchase content online, making revenue prospects slim for most sites. Entertainment companies should focus on a niche market A niche market also known as a target market is a focused, targetable portion (subset) of a market sector.

By definition, then, a business that focuses on a niche market is addressing a need for a product or service that is not being addressed by mainstream providers.
and offer users greater depth or functionality online than they do in other media.

Digital Commerce: Jupiter projected that revenues from digital distribution will reach just $147 million by 2003-comprising 5.7 percent of online music sales. In the near term, however, downloadable music will serve as a powerful driver of the larger market of physical online music sales, which is expected to exceed $2.6 billion by 2003. Music industry players must adopt a less defensive tack, aggressively using digital distribution as a tool to market and sell music.
