:JNPR JNPR Juniper Networks, Inc. (stock symbol) ) today announced new Ethernet Services products that reduce the cost and complexity for service providers deploying and migrating legacy networks and services to Ethernet. The new Ethernet Services cards provide high-density Ethernet interfaces and advanced, fine-grained quality of service (QoS) functionality in a modular system that can be added incrementally and non-disruptively to existing M- and T-series routing platforms. By combining Juniper Networks' proven strengths in routing with next-generation Ethernet technology, the new Ethernet Services cards enable service providers to efficiently introduce new, high-value services over Ethernet while concurrently reducing capital and operational costs.

"It is encouraging to see Juniper incorporate its core strengths in routing to deliver an Ethernet-optimized solution," said Mark Bieberich, director, Yankee Group (the Yankee Group, Boston, MA, www.yankeegroup.com) A major market research, analysis and consulting firm founded in 1970 by Howard Anderson. It provides general consulting and strategic planning in the computer and communications field. . "As Ethernet services and networks become more complex, they will increasingly require the advanced QoS and performance at scale that has brought Juniper tremendous success in the routing market."

The new Ethernet Services cards support Juniper Networks new Ethernet Services Engine technology, a modular software See modular programming.  and hardware platform that provides a feature set optimized for next-generation, Ethernet-based services for the M- and T-series routing platforms. The Ethernet Services Engine offers sophisticated QoS and traffic management features that effectively meet the performance requirements of both broadband business services and residential multiplay services.

The Ethernet Services cards offer an advanced feature set including:

--Advanced QoS: The Ethernet Service cards feature fine-grained QoS, intelligent oversubscription Oversubscription

The excess number of shares or bonds that investors want to buy but are not available due to high demand.
and hierarchical queuing capabilities at the interface level, which improves port density, can reduce costs and enables service providers to ensure services receive the appropriate level of service, regardless of traffic conditions. This enables providers to offer a variety of services -- such as VLAN/transparent LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. , L2/L3 VPNs, Voice over IP and Video over IP -- over Ethernet, with guaranteed SLAs.

--Service flexibility: Juniper is an industry leader in both MPLS (1) (MultiProtocol Lambda Switching) The earlier name for GMPLS. See GMPLS.

(2) (MultiProtocol Label Switching) A standard from the IETF for including routing information in the packets of an IP network.
and VPLS (Virtual Private LAN Service) A multipoint virtual private network (VPN) service from carriers that connects any number of Ethernet LANs together over an IP core, typically using MPLS, although other encapsulation protocols can be used. , and the new Ethernet Services cards integrate directly with Juniper Networks routing platforms and JUNOS operating system operating system (OS)

Software that controls the operation of a computer, directs the input and output of data, keeps track of files, and controls the processing of computer programs.
, providing a wide range of services over Ethernet interfaces.

--Performance at scale: The new Ethernet Service cards leverage the M- and T- series' distributed architecture and feature on-board processing, ensuring that performance scales with the addition of interfaces.

--Simple, non-disruptive migration: Because the new products are available today for the entire installed base of M- and T-Series, service providers can immediately take advantage of the latest Ethernet technology without the cost and risks associated with introducing a new platform or operating system to the network. Further, software programmability ensures Juniper Networks platforms can easily adapt to address future requirements. The Juniper Networks solution also enables interworking (standard) interworking - Systems or components, possibly from different origins, working together to perform some task. Interworking depends crucially on standards to define the interfaces between the components.  between ATM, Frame Relay A high-speed packet switching protocol used in wide area networks (WANs). Providing a granular service of up to DS3 speed (45 Mbps), it has become popular for LAN to LAN connections across remote distances, and services are offered by most major carriers. , VPN (Virtual Private Network) A private network that is configured within a public network (a carrier's network or the Internet) in order to take advantage of the economies of scale and management facilities of large networks.  and Ethernet networks, ensuring a seamless migration from legacy technologies.

"As Ethernet moves from a low-cost, simple transport mechanism to a platform for delivering increasingly sophisticated, high-value business and residential services, the market is moving toward Juniper's unique ability to solve our customers' most complex problems," said Manoj Leelanivas, vice president of product management, Infrastructure Products Group, Juniper Networks. "By building on our installed base of customers and our proven leadership in traffic management and highly reliable performance at scale, the new Ethernet Services cards deliver the combination of cost-effective Ethernet and reliability and advanced QoS features required to deliver the next-generation of Ethernet services."

The new Ethernet Services interface card portfolio consists of four cards designed to give service providers the ability to deploy the optimal solution for their unique service requirements. Specifically, the product family consists of a 4-port Gigabit Ethernet An Ethernet standard that transmits at 1 Gbps. Used mostly to connect high-end workstations and servers as well as for network backbones, Gigabit Ethernet transmits full duplex from point to point using switches and half duplex in a shared environment (CSMA/CD) using a hub.  card supporting up to 4:1 oversubscription, an 8-port Gigabit Ethernet card supporting up to 2:1 oversubscription, an 8-port Gigabit Ethernet card supporting line rate performance on all interfaces and a single port 10 Gigabit Ethernet Type card supporting line rate performance.

The new Ethernet Services cards will be featured in the Juniper Networks booth (#42031) at GLOBALCOMM 2006, along with Juniper's portfolio of secure and assured networking solutions for the delivery of advanced IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) Also called "TV over IP," IPTV delivers scheduled TV programs and video-on-demand (VOD) via the IP protocol and digital streaming techniques used to watch video on the Internet.  and multiplay services. Also at GLOBALCOMM, Juniper Networks will be hosting a press and analyst luncheon event on Tuesday, June 6, to discuss enhancements to its IPTV strategies and partnerships. The luncheon will take place at the Hyatt McCormick Place (Room CC 10 AB), and the presentation will also be webcast for those not attending GLOBALCOMM at: http://www.juniper.net/events/globalcomm/.
