Junction City woman turns 100.


Byline: The Register-Guard

Junction City Junction City, city (1990 pop. 20,604), seat of Geary co., NE Kans., at the confluence of the Republican and Smoky Hill rivers; inc. 1859. The rail, trade, and processing center of an agricultural and dairy area, it grew as the supply point for nearby Fort Riley,  resident Lida Rachel Stensland-Olson celebrated her 100th birthday Aug. 11.

She was born Aug. 11, 1904, to Edward and Tilly Stensland.

She has fond memories of her childhood log home in Gordon, Wis., and of her grandparents' cave home, including its dirt floors, in Randal, Iowa.

During World War II, she worked in the Twin Cities Ordnance Plant, where she remembers shaking hands with President Roosevelt when he visited the new munitions mu·ni·tion

She also remembers that when she started work on April 1, 1942, her starting pay was 54 cents per hour and she worked 7 days a week, the usual work schedule during World War II.

When she first moved to California, she lived in Hollywood and remained single for many years.

While working at Lockheed Aircraft, she met Peter Olie Olson, who also worked there. While living on the ranch, she began raising exotic birds The Exotic Birds was a pop music group formed in Cleveland, Ohio in 1983 by three Cleveland Institute of Music percussion students, Andy Kubiszewski, Tom Freer and Tim Adams. They wrote their own music and were described as synth pop, techno-pop and techno-dance.  with her husband.

After her husband died in 1981, she moved to Las Vegas for a brief period before relocating to Junction City.

Her interests now include bingo, dining out and traveling. She still entertains people from all over the world in her home.

A cruise of the Inland Passage of Alaska is planned for the spring of 2005 to celebrate her 100th birthday.
