an article in the Vindicator (Ohio), an 83-year-old man fended off an attacker in his home.

. This action saved him from becoming a repeat victim.

On October 28, as Swita walked to his house from his car, he saw a man who had been loitering Loitering (IPA pronunciation: ['lɔɪtəˌrɪŋ] is an intransitive verb meaning to stand idly, to stop numerous times, or to delay and procrastinate.  on the sidewalk A Microsoft service that was launched in 1997 to provide online arts and entertainment guides on the Web for major cities worldwide.  and attacked him from behind, grabbing Swita's neck and shoving him. Swita fell forward and shot his attacker twice--in the head and chest. When the police arrived at Swita's, they found Swita lying on the floor with minor head injuries. The robber had fatal wounds. Two other men reportedly fled from the scene.

A story on WKBN.com quoted Swita as saying about the incident, "As a rule, I don't carry a gun. I don't want to shoot anyone.... You have to do what you have to do, you know." In Swita's case, after being beaten and robbed, he felt be had one of two options: arm himself or move. Since he has been a Youngstown resident since the 1920s and has a sister in the area, moving was not an option. The city prosecutor has declined to press charges against Swita. The county prosecutor has not yet made a decision in the case.
