J These imaginative books are aimed at an older elementary audience, but they should do fine by younger YAs and they're sure to delight teachers as well. Each volume covers its topic in 20 chapters, built around an annotated map (journeys) or place diagram (places). Text takes readers through 10 or 12 annotated spots on the double-page stops. For instance, the Lowell Mill Town double page in Places has stops that discuss boarding house life and waterpower waterpower Power produced by a stream of water as it turns a wheel or similar device. The waterwheel, probably invented in the 1st century BC, was widely used throughout the Middle Ages and into modern times for grinding grain, operating bellows for furnaces, and other , among others; the stops on Journeys' pages are more obvious ones. Topics cover traditional and more contemporary historical approaches. We get the voyage of the Mayflower Mayflower, ship Mayflower, ship that in 1620 brought the Pilgrims from England to New England. She set out from Southampton in company with the Speedwell, and founding New Mexico New Mexico, state in the SW United States. At its northwestern corner are the so-called Four Corners, where Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah meet at right angles; New Mexico is also bordered by Oklahoma (NE), Texas (E, S), and Mexico (S). ; we go to the Pacific with Lewis and Clark, take the Underground Railroad Underground Railroad, in U.S. history, loosely organized system for helping fugitive slaves escape to Canada or to areas of safety in free states. It was run by local groups of Northern abolitionists, both white and free blacks. and leave Vietnam. In Places we go from Cahokia, Illinois to New Plymouth, Boonesborough and Ellis Island.
