) today reported that advertising revenues for the five weeks ended August 4, 2002 were $25.8 million, an increase of 2.4 percent as compared to $25.2 million for the five weeks ended August 5, 2001.

For comparison purposes, where noted, the Company's advertising revenues are presented on a same-store basis, which excludes the revenues of the Company's acquisitions and dispositions from the current and prior year periods.

On a same-store basis, the Company's total advertising revenues for Period Seven decreased 1.2 percent as compared to Period Seven of 2001.

The Company's advertising results were led by growth in retail revenues. Retail advertising revenues, on a same-store basis, increased 1.7 percent as compared to the prior year period, which is the best year-over-year retail advertising performance since Period Seven of 2000. Strong year-over-year retail advertising results in Period Seven were reported by the Company's Central New England New England, name applied to the region comprising six states of the NE United States—Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. The region is thought to have been so named by Capt.  Cluster, which was up 9.0 percent, the Connecticut Cluster, which reported a gain of 3.2 percent, and the Capital-Saratoga Cluster, which increased 3.1 percent, all led by strength in preprint pre·print

On a same-store basis, classified advertising revenues in Period Seven decreased 4.5 percent as compared to the prior year period. Classified real estate advertising revenues, on a same-store basis, were up 6.2 percent as compared to the prior year period led by the Company's Greater Philadelphia, Mid-Hudson and Connecticut Clusters, up 15.3 percent, 6.9 and 5.7 percent, respectively. Total classified automotive advertising revenues, on a same-store basis, increased 3.0 percent as compared to Period Seven of 2001, with strength in the Company's Capital-Saratoga, Greater Cleveland Greater Cleveland is a nickname for the metropolitan area surrounding Cleveland in Ohio.

Northeast Ohio refers to a similar but substantially larger area as described below.
 and Connecticut Clusters, up 14.5 percent, 11.5 and 5.8 percent, respectively. Classified employment advertising revenues were down 16.4 percent for Period Seven as compared to the prior year period.

National advertising revenues, on a same-store basis, for Period Seven grew 0.8 percent as compared to Period Seven of 2001.

Several Journal Register Company newspapers had strong advertising revenue performances in Period Seven.
