Josephene's taste of special Scouse soul.

JOSEPHENE makes sweet soul music that brings light into your day. The Liverpool singer/songwriter is playing Bumper tonight with her fantastic band.

"I''m performing at Liverpool Music Week with my amazing band - my conga player was born and raised in Brooklyn and used to play with James Brown, Al Green and Stevie Wonder," she explains.

So I caught up with Josephene to find out more about her musical inspiration.

"I always play funk music," she says. "And I always have a binge of rock to my music too. The music I have on my iPod is fuel-like food, it''s essential to my survival, it can change my mood or prepare me as soon as I put it on.

Tom Cat by Muddy Waters "This song was so ahead of its time, real psychedelic Funk with mammoth vocals and lyrics that are so raw and sexually charged that they would blow anything around today out the water and be just as edgy and unique."

If I''m In Luck I Just Might Get Picked Up by Betty Davis "Betty Davis - the singer not the famous actress. Not a lot of people know who this artist is but she''s my hero, she was married to Miles Davis and had an affair with Jimmy Hendrix, she was never really main stream.

"This song is a perfect funk song, her vocals are so powerful and there is a synth on the track that is so infectious you just have to dance to it.

"I love everything about this song and the title makes me laugh every time I hear it."

Dirty Tricks by The Pointer Sisters "I've never heard harmonies like this, I don''t think I understood what harmonies were until I heard this song - amazing."

Wanna Be Your Lover by Prince "My number one has got be Prince - I''m such a big fan and this is one of my favourite songs. I listen to it every day. It sounds like what falling in love should sound like, you can almost hear him smiling in his vocal. Prince is a genius."

Sleep With Me by Thomas Lang "This is a beautiful song that I''m thinking about covering. Immaculately performed, produced and written. The melodies are so haunting and vocals so passionate.". Josephene plays Bumper on Hardman St tonight at 7.30pm.
