Under the terms of the new agreement, Jones Lang LaSalle will continue to provide retail management, accounting, engineering, marketing and leasing services. Jones Lang LaSalle was chosen by the MTA in 1994 to manage the entire redevelopment process and to implement a comprehensive leasing campaign for the 180,000 SF of retail space at the terminal. Jones Lang LaSalle's role included development manager for the revitalization; general contractor A general contractor is an organization or individual that contracts with another organization or individual (the owner) for the construction of a building, road or any other execution of work or facility. for construction services related to the restoration of public spaces and creation of retail and dining areas; tenant coordinator for retail buildouts; and development of a strategic operating plan for the ongoing public/private management of the facility. "It is exciting to see the change in attitude toward Grand Central from New Yorkers and tourists alike," stated Dawson. "It used to be that the terminal served as an exit for the millions of commuters who passed in and out each day on the way to other destinations. Now, the terminal itself is the destination. We see New Yorkers coming to the terminal to shop and eat at the 80 retail stores and restaurants, and tourists experiencing the history and beauty of this world-renowned landmark."
