Dubai -- As part of inter-government departments continuous communication, Dubai Customs held Sunday 1 March 2009 a coordinating meeting with Dubai Municipality to discuss prospects of setting up a joint mechanism for classifying new cosmetic preparations and adding them to the existing e-system of restricted and prohibited goods that linked with customs tariff tables.

The meeting, which was held at Dubai Cargo Village, is the 3rd of its kind where Customer Service at Airport Zone and Customs Tarrif and origin departments represented Dubai Customs while Dubai Municipality was represented by Consumer Goods Safety Section.

The aim of such meetings is to maintain people's health and safety where Dubai Municipality provides Dubai Customs with all registered lists of names and classifications of cosmetic preparations as to be linked and aligned with tariff tables in conformity with WCO Harmonized System Codes.

Underlining the importance of such coordinating meetings, Mr. Mohammed Faraj Abdullah, Senior Manager of Customer Service at Airport Zone said: "The meetings are held under the directives of Dubai Customs Director General, Mr. Ahmed Butti Ahmed to communicate with government departments and develop business processes in a way maintaining people's health and safety considering that Dubai Customs is the first defense line against different imported goods and products."

"Dubai customs is a regulatory agency receives from competent agencies either at Federal or Local level lists of products and linking them to the existing restriction and prohibition system, which help to facilitate customs clearing processing based on true information," he maintained.

Mr. Ali Ahmed Saeed, Manager of Customs Tariff Section said: "the meeting assists with reviewing tariff headings of consumer products lists relative to cosmetic preparations, disinfectants and food supplements and classifying them in accordance with customs tariff table."

Expressing gratitude to Dubai Customs for organizing such meetings, Naseem Mohammed Rafie, Head of Consumer Products Safety Section at Dubai Municipality said: "Consultations over different names and classifications of goods and products entering local markets take place at these meetings enhancing inspection methods carried out by Dubai Customs and Dubai Municipality, each within scope of its competence, as to eventually fulfill social and economic security requirements".

"Discussions taking place at the meeting constitute a good opportunity for each party to present its views. We asked Dubai Customs to add the new lists of cosmetic preparations in line with the HS Code list and consumer's interest and safety," she added.

Both departments agreed to continue holding meetings between their respective sections to develop a joint mechanism for controlling entry and inspection procedures of new cosmetic products at different Dubai Customs Centers and ensuring their safety and conformity with the standard specifications. 2009 Al Bawaba (www.albawaba.com)
