As reported on p. 14 of this issue of Parks & Recreation, NRPA NRPA National Recreation and Park Association NRPA Natural Resources Protective Association (Staten Island, NY) NRPA Niagara Regional Police Association (Canada) NRPA National Rifle and Pistol Association has partnered with Sports Illustrated Sports Illustrated is the largest weekly American sports magazine owned by media conglomerate Time Warner. It has over 3 million subscribers and is read by 23 million adults each week, including over 18 million men, 19% of the adult males in the country. to help celebrate Sports Illustrated's 50th anniversary. This partnership gives the parks and recreation industry a unique opportunity to showcase how parks and recreation are critical to quality community sports. NRPA and Sports Illustrated would like agencies to join them in this yearlong year·long adj. Lasting one year. Adj. 1. yearlong - lasting through a year; "attending yearlong courses" long - primarily temporal sense; being or indicating a relatively great or greater than average duration or celebration of quality community sports. Sports Illustrated has made a special 50th anniversary logo that is free for parks and recreation agencies to use. Feel free to use this logo on all your marketing materials as well as on uniforms. Agencies that participate will have the opportunity to be recognized in Sports Illustrated and could be a potential stop on Sports Illustrated's Community Sports Tour. Here are some ideas to boost the visibility of your existing programs and some ideas for new programs as well. 4th of July Parades: One of the most popular July activities is the 4th of July parade. One great way to boost visibility to your sports is to invite your sports teams to participate in your 4th of July parade. All ages and abilities can participate. Have teams wear their uniforms and march in the parade. Along with the Sports Illustrated logo, try to create a slogan A slogan is a memorable motto or phrase used in a political, commercial, religious and other context as a repetitive expression of an idea or purpose. Slogans vary from the written and the visual to the chanted and the vulgar. to help bring visibility to your sports and other programs. NRPA has two packages with logos ready to use by your department. Once you pay the small annual licensing fee, you can use the "Discover the Benefits of Parks and Recreation" or the "Come Out and Play America" logos and slogans to help create more visibility around your programs. Once you decide on a slogan and logo, use them on all your marketing, including press releases. Add the logo and slogan to your letterhead. Put it on your summer staff shirts, or try baseball caps with your new logo this year. Sports Swap: Have your agency host a sports swap. You can do this event any way you want. Each team in your community can have their own booth. If your agency is trying to raise money for a new sports facility or new uniforms, you can make this a donation activity. People can donate their old equipment to the department, which can then sell the equipment to raise funds. This is a great way for those who can't afford new sports equipment to be able to participate in sports. Choose one of the contests below or come up with your own. Ask residents to submit their best stories, cheers, menus and photos. The best stories can be selected to run in the local paper. Stories can be put in your brochure or on your Web site.
