For the first nine months of fiscal year 2001, earnings per diluted share advanced 18% to $0.80 compared with $0.68 in the prior year. Net income of $50.7 million for the nine months increased 15% over the prior year. Revenues grew 5% over the comparable prior year period, or 8% excluding foreign currency translation effects. Third quarter results were tempered somewhat by industry-wide sluggish sales, particularly in the Higher Education higher education Study beyond the level of secondary education. Institutions of higher education include not only colleges and universities but also professional schools in such fields as law, theology, medicine, business, music, and art. and Professional/Trade segments. Higher Education revenues were essentially flat for the quarter primarily due to accelerated ordering by college bookstores earlier in the year. For the nine months, Wiley's Higher Education revenues were up 6%, which compares favorably with overall market growth. According to according to prep. 1. (AAP AAP - Association of American Publishers ), the Higher Education market reported a sales increase of only 3% in calendar year 2000. For the quarter, Professional/Trade revenues were up 4%, reflecting the effect of sales softness at some key retail accounts, as well as tighter inventory management practices adopted by major wholesalers. Year-to-date Professional/Trade revenues were up 10%, significantly better than industry results. Scientific, Technical and Medical (STM (Scanning Tunneling Microscope) A microscope that can image down to the atomic level. Renewal rates for STM journals were stronger in calendar year 2000 than in the prior year. "Although our revenue growth was modest in the third quarter, Wiley's year-to-date results remain healthy, as reflected in an 8% increase in revenues, excluding foreign currency translation effects, and an 18% increase in EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) A PostScript file format used to transfer a graphic image between applications and platforms. EPS files contain PostScript code as well as an optional preview image in TIFF, WMF, PICT or EPSI, the latter being an ASCII-only format. ," said William J. Pesce, President & Chief Executive Officer. "Even though the fourth quarter is the least important quarter for Wiley in financial terms, we experienced an unusually strong fourth quarter last year, which will make the year-to-year comparison difficult. In addition, industry-wide sales softness is likely to continue through the remainder of the fiscal year. Despite these factors, we still expect to achieve our EPS growth of 10-12% in fiscal year 2001. Our balance sheet is strong and cash flow is steady. We are well positioned to invest in our future and strengthen our competitive position." Segment Highlights The domestic STM segment reported a 10% increase in its contribution to profit for the quarter on a 5% revenue improvement. The journal and book programs reported increases. For the fiscal year-to-date period, STM's profit contribution increased 13% on a revenue gain of 5%. In addition to the revenue growth, improved gross margins contributed to the profit increase. European revenues advanced 5% for the quarter, excluding the adverse foreign currency translation impact of the strong U.S. dollar. For the first nine months of the fiscal year, the European segment's profit contribution advanced 8% on a revenue gain of 9%, excluding foreign currency translation effects.
