John Tolsma Named to Board of Directors of Greene County Bancshares.

GREENEVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 28, 2004

Greene County Bancshares, Inc. (NASDAQ/NM:GCBS) today announced that John Tolsma (age 31) has been named to the Company's Board of Directors. Tolsma's appointment fills a vacancy on the Board created by the recent retirement of Davis Stroud.

Tolsma is President of Knoxville, Tennessee-based Erroyo, an educational multimedia firm he founded in 2000. A subsidiary of RIVR Media Group, Erroyo is an integrated learning company currently working with university and corporate partners to develop unique and effective educational experiences using rich media tools, including video, CD-ROM CD-ROM: see compact disc.

Tolsma formulated the idea for Erroyo during his graduate studies at Harvard University. There he received simultaneous Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration degrees from Harvard Law School Harvard Law School (colloquially, Harvard Law or HLS) is one of the professional graduate schools of Harvard University. Located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Harvard Law is considered one of the most prestigious law schools in the United States.  and Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. He was a recipient of Harvard Business School's Dean's Award for leadership excellence and wrote biweekly editorials as a political columnist for the Harbus News. He also drew inspiration for Erroyo from his previous experience as an aid to Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander in his 1996 and 2000 presidential campaigns, along with earlier work as a consultant to The Edison Project, a for-profit education provider.

Tolsma was a consultant to Bill Haslam in his 2003 campaign to become the Mayor of Knoxville. In 2004, Business Tennessee named him to its list of the "Top 40 Under 40" up-and-coming business leaders in the state.

Outside of his business interests, Tolsma currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, and is a member of the Board of Visitors, Trinity College, Duke University.
