John P. Sumner Founded, Will Head New American Intellectual Property Law Association Committee.

John P. Sumner, a partner with the intellectual property law firm Merchant & Gould, recently founded and will serve as chair of the newly-formed mentoring committee of the American Intellectual Property Law Association Headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) is a national bar association that was formed in 1897 to improve intellectual property laws and educate the public about such issues.  (AIPLA AIPLA American Intellectual Property Law Association ). As head of the mentoring committee, Sumner will develop a mentoring program to reach out to the AIPLA's 10,000 members.

Sumner is a founding member of Merchant & Gould's electronic and computer law practice group. His practice includes IP licensing, client counseling, strategic patent portfolio planning, and software law. He focuses on business methods patents, electronic commerce, and computer-controlled systems and methods. He has held numerous positions with the AIPLA throughout his career, including chair positions on the Electronics & Computer Law and Emerging Technologies committees, the latter of which he founded. He was also a member of the AIPLA board of directors from 1998 through 2001. Sumner is past President of the Minnesota Intellectual Property Law Association, and he is also past chair of the Minnesota State Bar Association's Computer Law Section, for which he remains a charter member of its governing gov·ern

Sumner was also recently named chair-elect of the Licensing Executives Society (LES) High Technology Sector. His post as chair-elect and then chair will run a total of two years beginning in September 2002.
