John Miller. The interpretation of what is meant by 'diagram' has varied ever since the Modern Movement got on its feet. The Diagram, the title for this issue of The Architectural Review The Architectural Review is a monthly international architectural magazine published in London since 1896. Articles cover the built environment which includes landscape, building design, interior design and urbanism as well as theory of these subjects. , brings to mind a series of linked functions intended to remove the possibility and danger of preconception pre·con·cep·tion n. An opinion or conception formed in advance of adequate knowledge or experience, especially a prejudice or bias. Noun 1. . However, a response to a brief always brings to bear pre-existing architectural luggage, including previous experiences, intuition, and a preference for particular formal arrangements. In my practice, this wardrobe is matched against the programme, and its needs, and is then modified accordingly. This process creates an ever-increasing system of reference. A particular concern has been the differentiation of those parts of a building subordinate to those that have a primary purpose. The latter are often the communal or public spaces, see Forest Gate High School (opposite below) and The Queen's Building, University of East Anglia “UEA” redirects here. For other uses, see UEA (disambiguation). Academically, it is one of the most successful universities founded in the 1960s, consistently ranking amongst Britain's top higher education institutions; 19th in the Sunday Times University League Table 2006 (opposite above). Such differentiation can be considered as positive or negative, the substance of figure ground theory. Through practice we have discovered that the figure ground study can be used to differentiate elements in the section as well as in the plan. See the cross section through the Harrison Townsend Whitechapel Art Gallery where the upper gallery (negative) nests above the lower main gallery (positive). The precedent that has underpinned this approach is that of the 'servant and served' as advocated by Louis Kahn Louis Isadore Kahn (born Itze-Leib Schmuilowsky) (February 20, 1901 or 1902 – March 17, 1974) was a world-renowned architect based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After working in various capacities for several firms in Philadelphia, he founded his own firm in 1935. and exemplified in his labs and bathhouses. Although buildings can be analysed diagramatically, I believe their genesis was one of concept rather than through the exercise of diagram. The diagram can be used to explain a building a posteriori [Latin, From the effect to the cause.] A posteriori describes a method of reasoning from given, express observations or experiments to reach and formulate general principles from them. This is also called inductive reasoning. but is not necessarily a tool in its development. JOHN MILLER, JOHN MILLER + PARTNERS Admired: It is hard to imagine Alvar Aalto's work being a product of a diagram and as far as I know there is no example to illustrate this in his published works. As in all Aalto's buildings, the structure of the land and the temperament of its people have helped shape the house. In his writings, Aalto acknowledged that his designs started in an irrational way and that he was stirred by mythic and atavistic at·a·vism n. 1. The reappearance of a characteristic in an organism after several generations of absence, usually caused by the chance recombination of genes. 2. An individual or a part that exhibits atavism. impulses. He implied, by tapping them and erasing from his mind the often contradictory requirements of a design brief, that he could then give free rein to instinct. Thus 'a basic design is born'. His sketches gradually respond to the demands of use, technical and economic necessities. The Villa Mairea Villa Mairea is a villa, guest-house and rural retreat built by the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto for Harry and Maire Gullichsen in Noormarkku, Finland. The Gullichsens were a wealthy couple and members of the Ahlström — Gullichsen family. is not dependent upon any apparent ordering system. It is not schematic A graphical representation of a system. It often refers to electronic circuits on a printed circuit board or in an integrated circuit (chip). See logic gate and HDL. .
