A resident of Manhattan, McCarthy previously was treasury manager at Toys "R" Us Toys "R" Us (currently typeset as ToYsЯuS in the logo) is a toy store chain based in the United States, Canada, Australia,The Netherlands, South Africa, Hong Kong and the United Kingdom. , Inc., where he was in charge of quantitative financial modeling and regression analysis In statistics, a mathematical method of modeling the relationships among three or more variables. It is used to predict the value of one variable given the values of the others. For example, a model might estimate sales based on age and gender.  for the finance and real estate departments.

McCarthy also previously worked as a business development manager at GE Energy.

He earned a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, at Troy, N.Y.; coeducational; founded and opened 1824 as Rensselaer School; chartered 1826. It was called Rensselaer Institute from 1837 to 1861.  and a master's degree in Finance and Corporate Accounting from the University of Rochester's Simon School.
