John McCain for secretary of defense--President Kerry's secretary of defense, that is?
* John McCain for secretary of defense--President Kerry's
secretary of defense, that is? Well, why not? Take the reasons, from ig-
to noble. McCain dislikes George W. Bush, and nurses a grudge from the
2000 primaries. McCain has vouched for Kerry's toughness on defense
(though he qualified it by adding that Kerry would have to be judged on
his record). McCain, however frisky he might be feeling, could not be
Kerry's running mate, given his own Republican record and the
temper of the Democratic party; but presidents have reached out to
cabinet secretaries of the other party--Henry Stimson, John Connally,
Bill Cohen. McCain would be a voice of reason and firmness in a Kerry
cabinet--what others would there be? McCain has spoken of his career,
most notably at the 2000 Philadelphia convention, in wistful terms.
Crossing the aisle into the cabinet would be a gratifying, and possibly
useful, way to end it.
