John M. Poate to Head Technology Development for Axcelis Technologies, Inc.

BEVERLY, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 10, 2000

Axcelis Technologies, Inc., today named John M. Poate, currently Dean of the College of Science and Liberal Arts at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT NJIT New Jersey Institute of Technology ), to head technology development for the company. He will assume his new position in late June.

Poate, who will become Chief Technology Officer and report to Axcelis President and Chief Operating Officer Chief Operating Officer (COO)

, Mary G. Puma, is a leading authority on low- and high-energy ion implantation technology development, and is the author of three books and over 250 articles and papers in the areas of materials science, semiconductor processing and nuclear physics.

Prior to assuming his present position at NJIT in 1997, Poate was department head of the Silicon Processing Research Department at Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies.

From 1984 to 1990 he was head of the Interface Physics Research Department at Bell Laboratories, and before that, was employed at the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Research Establishment The Atomic Energy Research Establishment (AERE) near Harwell, Oxfordshire was the main centre for atomic energy research and development in the United Kingdom from the 1940s to the 1990s.  in Harwell, England.

Poate is Past President of the Materials Research Society, and past Chair of the Division of Materials Physics of the American Physical Society The American Physical Society was founded in 1899 and is the world's second largest organization of physicists. The Society publishes more than a dozen science journals, including the world renowned Physical Review and Physical Review Letters, and organizes more than twenty science . He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, and editor of Applied Physics Reviews. He is past Chair of the Physical and Engineering Sciences Panel for NATO.
