 complains that there are two Americas, and that the system is rigged to benefit the rich one. The editors of the Wall Street Journal report that the senator has gone to great lengths to illustrate the point in his tax returns, using a legal maneuver that lets him out of paying Medicare taxes. There are ways of rationalizing away this apparent hypocrisy: Edwards could say that it would be unfair to ask him, alone among rich people, to foreswear fore·swear

 the benefits of unfair tax laws. People can draw their own conclusions about how publicspirited such a stance is. We will press the point no further.
