John Deere intros StarFire iTC and Parallel Tracking.

John Deere wants more farmers to get started with guidance technology, for which it has introduced StarFire The code name for Sun's high-end Ultra Enterprise 10000 server, which was introduced in 1997. It is an SMP-based system that supports up to 64 processors and 64GB of RAM. iTC and the next generation of Parallel Tracking. The new Parallel Tracking system will be a more economical system for producers, which should help them gel started with guidance technology, according to Gordon Culp, division manager marketing, John Deere Ag Management Solutions.

The basic package includes the three common GreenStar components and a Parallel Tracking KeyCard, which together provides a manual guidance system at a very economical price. This system can be used on any tractor, sprayer, combine, or any other machine with a 12-volt power source, Culp says.

The three common GreenStar components include a StarFire iTC receiver, GreenStar display, and mobile processor A CPU chip designed for portable computers. It is typically housed in a smaller chip package, but more importantly, in order to run cooler, it uses lower voltages than its desktop counterpart and has more "sleep mode" capability. A mobile processor can be throttled down to different power levels and/or sections of the chip can be turned off entirely when not in use.. Parallel Tracking guides the operator through the field. While the operator steers the tractor, the display keeps him on a straight or curved path. New or used equipment, any make or model, can use the system.

The entire Parallel Tracking system for a GreenStar-ready vehicle is currently priced at $4495.00. The price for the new Parallel Tracking system will be even less for those producers who already own a GreenStar display lot yield monitoring, SeedStar display for population monitoring or SprayStar display for sprayer controls.  correction signal to StarFire iTC users at no cost. The SFI signal provides a worldwide correction solution in areas where a government signal is not available or dependable.

"The key advantage of Parallel Tracking is that it's built around the scalable StarFire iTC receiver," says Culp. The Parallel Tracking system can then easily be upgraded to the more advanced AutoTrac system, which would allow automatic steering by satellite.

This introductory system was designed for an operator who would like to try a guidance system without a substantial financial investment. "If they are pleased with what the new technology does for their operation, they can upgrade at any time to a more advanced satellite guidance system," says Culp.
