John William Coltrane (September 23 1926 – July 17 1967), nicknamed Trane, was an American jazz saxophonist and composer. and Johnny Hartman (Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL, or MoFi) is a company that produces audiophile releases of classic CDs and vinyl records. In the past, MoFi has produced audiophile cassette tapes, and Ultra High Quality Records (UHQRs) that were thicker and higher quality than UDCD 740) This recording, originally made in 1963, has become something of a legendary cult item over the years. It was the first time that Coltrane's classic quartet made a recording with a vocalist, and the results are, well, the stuff of legend. Hartman's rich voice and clear articulation are complemented perfectly by Coltrane's sax, McCoy Tyner's piano, Jimmy Garrison's bass, and Elvin Jones's drums. The songs are standards: "They Say It's Wonderful," "Dedicated to You," "My One and Only Love," "Lush Life," "You Are Too Beautiful," and "Autumn Serenade serenade [Ital. sera=evening], term used to designate several types of musical composition. Opera and song literature yield numerous examples of the serenade sung or played by a lover at night beneath his beloved's window; outstanding is ." They are all great performances, and engineer Rudy Van Gelder Rudy Van Gelder (born November 2, 1924 in Jersey City, New Jersey) is a recording engineer specialising in jazz. Commonly regarded as one of the most important recording engineers in music history,[1] captured everything in clean, nuanced sound, which the MFSL MFSL Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs remastering has presented in the best possible light. The only drawback to this release is its length -- it clocks in at just over 31 minutes. But don't let that stop you from getting this recording, which contains 31 of the most beautiful minutes of jazz vocals ever recorded. |
