 of the art world, this cultural biography should help motivate us to draw him closer to the center. He was an inventor, a businessman (not a successful one), and a book designer, but his story is significant in helping us understand the book as an art object. Rees narrates a tale which informs us of fifteenth-century Germany, a time when the Italian Renaissance was spreading north, and fresh ideas about humanity were forming which would be rapidly broadcast by the creation of printed books.
