Hundreds of jobs could be created in the community of Attawapiskat Attawapiskat (ăt'əwəpĭs`kăt), river, c.465 mi (750 km) long, flowing E from Attawapiskat Lake, N Ontario, Canada, then N and E into James Bay. The trading posts of Attawapiskat and Lansdowne House are on the river.  in the James Bay James Bay, shallow southern arm of Hudson Bay, c.300 mi (480 km) long and 140 mi (230 km) wide, E central Canada, in Nunavut Territory between Ont. and Que. Numerous rivers flow into the bay; many of these have been developed for hydroelectric power in Quebec (see  Lowlands following the discovery of diamonds in the area. De Beers . Canada Exploration Inc. recently admitted to finding diamonds in the area and are in the process of determing whether or not they have found a minable deposit.

Officials say if De Beers begins mining the area, it will have economic advantages to the First Nations community through training and jobs at the mine site. Attawapiskat First Nation and De Beers signed a memorandum of understanding A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is a legal document describing a bilateral or multilateral agreement between parties. It expresses a convergence of will between the parties, indicating an intended common line of action and may not imply a legal commitment.  in late 1999.

De Beers has been conducting a feasibility study "A Feasibility Study" is an episode of the original The Outer Limits television show. It first aired on 13 April, 1964, during the first season. It was remade in 1997 as part of the revived The Outer Limits series with a minor title change.  on the potential for a diamond mine in the area, including an evaluation of core sampling, and expect results by the end of 2001.
