"This is the most significant increase we've seen in on-campus resulting in years," says Dawn Traub, director of employment information for NACE. The service sector and manufacturing both reported sharp hiring increases.

But since employers are only hiring an average of 124 college graduates a year, most students still face a very daunting daunt

This means starting to prepare in sophomore, junior or even freshman year. "Our emphasis is on picking up kids as quickly as possible, even during orientation in freshman year," says Samuel M. Hall Jr., director of career services at Howard University Howard University, at Washington, D.C.; coeducational; with federal support. It was founded in 1867 by Gen. Oliver O. Howard of the Freedmen's Bureau, to provide education for newly emancipated slaves. A normal and preparatory department was opened the same year.  in Washington, D.C. "We want them to get involved in career development as soon as they are at the university."

Second came interpersonal skills "Interpersonal skills" refers to mental and communicative algorithms applied during social communications and interactions in order to reach certain effects or results. The term "interpersonal skills" is used often in business contexts to refer to the measure of a person's ability . Surprisingly, computer skills were ranked number six.

How can a student build up these skills? The experts recommend a three-pronged strategy. First, get the best grades possible, since many employees have grade point average requirements. secondly, become involved in extracurricular activities to demonstrate leadership and team abilities; third, sign up for internships in the fields you might enter.

"The most important thing a student can do is get some experience in cooperative programs The Cooperative Program is a unified funds collection program of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) designed to support SBC seminaries, mission agencies and denominational ministries.  or internships." says Traub. Prospective employers are more willing to hire someone who has had a track record. They feel more comfortable when a student has some experience in the real world of work.

programs. But those programs are only one of the services these centers can provide. Today, career offices have become the secret weapon in many a college student's job search. The range of services they offer is staggering from resume writing to job data banks, job posting, interviewing skills and job and career fairs. All these services can make a student more competitive.

But what if you are a good student and not a superstar with a 4.0 grade point average? That may make the job search more difficult, but not impossible by any standards. "These student's really need to learn to market themselves and to be a lot more aggressive." says NACE's Traub. One place to start this marketing program is at that career services office.

At Howard University Hall agrees with this advice: "I would tell students :to take full advantage of the services offered at their university," he says. "Don't sit back in the dormitory and wait for companies to come to you. You must be active--and use all the resources available."

Following is a brief look at the college recruiting programs and hiring practices of a number of major corporations today. We asked these companies what they are looking for, how students can build the right credentials and what they can do to make themselves stand out.
