Jim Gilmore M.D. Associated Uses New Skin Adhesive; New 'Glue' Removes Need for Sutures, Reduces Patient Discomfort.

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 6, 1998--The plastic and cosmetic surgeons at Jim Gilmore M.D. Associated have been approved to use a "super glue Super Glue Wound care A proprietary adhesive used for nonsuture closure of simple skin lacerations. See Laceration. " skin adhesive to close surgical incisions that previously required sutures or staples.

DERMABOND(TM) Topical Skin Adhesive was recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA FDA

). The adhesive will now be an option for patients of the North Dallas medical practice. DERMABOND has been shown to be as effective as sutures, while offering the advantages of shorter treatment time, easier application and less patient discomfort.

DERMABOND is applied in thin layers on the incision as its edges are held together. As it is applied, it reacts with the moisture on the skin's surface to form a strong, flexible bond in one to two minutes. It then forms a film over the incision that gradually falls off as the skin heals. Complete healing occurs in five to 10 days.

Dr. Gilmore and his associates, John Morehead M.D. and Kathryn Duplantis M.D., have received special training in the use of DERMABOND, and will use the adhesive for the closure of facial incisions, including the eyelid eyelid /eye·lid/ (-lid) either of two movable folds (upper and lower) protecting the anterior surface of the eyeball.

Dr. Gilmore said, "The excellent cosmetic result when using DERMABOND on incisions makes it an attractive alternative in several of our surgery applications. Applying the adhesive is significantly faster and less painful than closing incisions by traditional methods such as sutures." DERMABOND may also increase the patient's comfort since the need for an injection of anesthesia may be eliminated.

DERMABOND adhesive is licensed by Ethicon Inc., a Johnson & Johnson company, from Closure Medical Corporation in Raleigh, N.C. Its safety and effectiveness were established in a randomized ran·dom·ize
