Jewish Community Foundation Announces Grants to Innovative Nonprofit Programs Totaling $574,000; Jewish World Watch One of 19 Programs Receiving Funding.

), a new coalition of Los Angeles synagogues working together for the first time to combat genocide and human rights violations around the world, has raised and donated $150,000 for refugee relief in Darfur, Sudan. The funds, which enabled the International Medical Corps to build two health-care clinics and several water wells, have eased the suffering of hundreds of refugees affected by the atrocities taking place in Sudan.

Thanks to a $50,000 grant from the Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles (The Foundation), JWW will be able to develop its capacity and bolster its volunteer-based organization. Today, 23 synagogues participate in JWW, which aims to inform congregations, schools and the community about human rights violations and to educate Jews on how they can make a difference.

Since its inception, JWW has inspired teenagers at several local Jewish schools to raise money for water wells in Darfur, while other students have sold bracelets, and one 7-year-old raised money with an old-fashioned lemonade stand

The Foundation, the leader in planned-giving solutions for Greater Los Angeles Jewish philanthropists, allocated $750,000 to be distributed through Foundation Legacy Grants in 2005. New and Innovative Grants, which account for the largest portion of these funds, have been awarded for more than a decade.

--Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles, "New Mothers Connect," $30,000 -- Provides new mothers affected by post-partum depression with peer support, education, counseling and referral services.

--Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles, "Senior Substance Abuse Initiative," $31,000 -- To increase awareness and reduce substance abuse among older adults through outreach, training and education for Jewish seniors, family members, psychiatric services workers and volunteers.
