 earlier this year, this first commercially released performance of George Balanchine's plotless, full-evening work proudly earns a place in the permanent libraries of both casual balletomanes and veteran admirers of the choreographer. What seemed bold in 1967 still inspires superlatives today, and the crisp images of Opus Arte's DVD production trump the fuzzy visuals of conventional television.

The prize rendering here is Diamonds, in which Agnes Letestu, Jean-Guillaume Bart, and the incomparable POB corps triumph over the finicky editing to distill the spirit of Petipa through Balanchine's breathtaking design. While magnificently dispatched by principals Alessio Garbone and Aurelie Dupont (whose batterie could draw applause from a statue), Rubies misses the roguish rogu·ish
