According to the Associated Press, Peter Robert Phillips Jr. already has a U.S. passport, Social Security number, and Washington, D.C. driver's license issued in the name of Jesus Christ. But West Virginia, where Phillips is trying to relocate, isn't buying it because the man has never legally changed his name. A D.C. judge denied Phillips a legal name change two years ago on the grounds that the name could incite To arouse; urge; provoke; encourage; spur on; goad; stir up; instigate; set in motion; as in to incite a riot. Also, generally, in Criminal Law to instigate, persuade, or move another to commit a crime; in this sense nearly synonymous with abet.  a "violent reaction" or "significantly offend people." (And rightly so: Can you imagine the guilt of getting into a car accident with Jesus Christ? You'd never get over that.) But last month, an appeals court sent the name-change proposal back to the lower court for review.

Christ's attorney told the AP that the name change was an effort at "expressing his faith and his respect and love for Jesus Christ."

"We just need official documentation that that's his name," says Doug Stump, commissioner of the West Virginia DMV. "He will be treated no different than anybody else."

At press time, Christ was not commenting on the situation.
