Jazz master.

At 42, pianist Fred Hersch Fred Hersch (born October 21, 1955 in Cincinnati, Ohio) is a contemporary American jazz pianist who has become a consistent and highly demanded performer on the international jazz scene.

Hersch began playing piano at a very young age.

composers. He is also one of the

genre's few openly gay artists. Six

years ago, after announcing his HIV-positive

status, Hersch entered one of

the most prolific periods of his career.

His two most recent releases include

Thelonius Monk seems like one of the

most difficult artists to interpret. His

compositions are so quirky quirk

complex. Why did you choose him?

It was a big challenge. I think a lot of

people are scared off by him for fear

of sounding too much like him or not

enough. But at 42, 1 don't care

 what

critics think.

You don't?

Well, I want them to love me. But I

don't have anything

to prove. My reputation

is what it is.

It seems that a lot of

gay men are put off by

jazz because either

they don't believe it

speaks to their own

experience or they

believe the genre itself

to be somehow

intolerant of

homosexuality.

I think that's a generalization.

To begin with, the

number of people who

listen to instrumental

music at all is small.

And once you factor

out the percentage of

gay people within an

already small number,

that's not a lot of gay

listeners.

From your perspective, is jazz a homophobic ho·mo·pho·bi·a

It has been portrayed--not

unfairly--as a macho men's club.

Not overtly. I'm sure people have said things behind

my back. But at this point in my life,

I don't care.

created in large part by African-American

artists. Does a gay artist bring

something unique to this art form?

It depends on the artist. I have a distinct

style, which has as much to do with

listening to the music I did while I was

growing up as it does with my own

sense of musical aesthetics. But the

fact remains that you can't hear an

artist and say he's gay or he isn't.

If a person were just beginning to

explore jazz, what should he or she

listen to?

The classic first jazz album is

Miles Davis's Kind of Blue. I'd also

recommend that they watch the movie
