Gary Burton (b. Anderson, IN, January 23 1943) is an American jazz vibraphonist and composer.

In addition to the young musicians on your new CD, who else is keeping jazz vital and popular?

I was very impressed with [Twentysomething singer-pianist] Jamie Cullum last summer at Newport.

When Melissa Etheridge came out it was a media event. How did coming out affect your career?

The public makes a lot more fuss about pop artists' marriages, divorces, sexuality, drunken escapades, whatever. I was able to come out without [any] negative consequences.

What prompted your move to Fort Lauderdale [after retiring as executive vice president of Boston's prestigious Berklee College of Music Berklee College of Music, founded in 1945, is an independent music college in Boston, Massachusetts, with many prominent faculty, staff, alumni, and visiting artists. It has an enrollment of approximately 3,900 students and a 2004 faculty of approximately 430. ]?

I moved to Florida to get a break from the northeastern weather--and to Fort Lauderdale in particular because there is an active and friendly gay scene.

Do young gay musicians see you as a role model?

I hope [so]. I've had a successful career.
