The topics, forums and sessions available to conference attendees will provide Java developers the opportunity to understand and apply the next generation of Java technology for mobility, Web Services and enterprise development. In addition to its Java University(SM) program, the conference schedule will focus on the following eight topics, which include more than 200 technical sessions and will feature speakers that are the true innovators in the Java community.

Java Core Technology (25 sessions, 24 BOFs)

Attendees will discover what is up-and-coming for the Java(TM) 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE (Java 2 platform, Standard Edition) See Java 2.

J2SE - Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition
(TM)), the premier platform for development of Internet and Intranet applications. The areas of language, libraries, performance, memory management, tools, security, and more will be featured in sessions taught by Java technology engineers, licensees and partners.

Java Technology in Mobility (38 sessions, 31 BOFs)

As Java technology for mobile devices and embedded systems has reached a significant point in its evolution, industry specialists will provide a detailed overview of the latest changes and updates in MIDP (Mobile Information Device Profile) A programming interface (API) for cellphones and pagers for the Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME). It provides support for a graphical interface, networking and storage of persistent data for "MID Profile" applications,  2.0, Java(TM) 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME (Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition) A version of Java 2 for cellphones, PDAs and consumer appliances. J2ME uses the K Virtual Machine (KVM), a specialized Java interpreter for devices with limited memory. (TM)) Personal Profile and J2ME Personal Basis Profile, and Java Card(TM) 2.2 technologies. Advanced programming techniques for addressing the unique characteristics of modern mobile clients will also be explored.

Core Enterprise (34 sessions, 24 BOFs)

Attendees will learn how to become more productive and valuable to the enterprise using Java technology-based server-side component architecture, focusing on business logic rather than system level programming. Experts will discuss, in detail, the latest innovations in Enterprise JavaBeans(TM) technology, Java(TM) DataBase Connectivity (JDBC (Java DataBase Connectivity) A programming interface that lets Java applications access a database via the SQL language. Since Java interpreters (Java Virtual Machines) are available for all major client platforms, this allows a platform-independent database (TM)) software, the Java(TM) 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) A platform from Sun for building distributed enterprise applications. J2EE services are performed in the middle tier between the user's machine and the enterprise's databases and legacy information systems. (TM)) platform, Connector Architecture, J2EE application servers, performance tuning, design patterns, and application compatibility. Special topics for discussion include Extreme Programming in the J2EE platform and real-world industry case studies.

Java Technology in the Web Tier (16 sessions, 20 BOFs)

Technologies and methodologies for the development of dynamic and engaging Web content using the Java 2 Platform Java 2 Platform - Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition  is the focus of discussion in these topic sessions. Attendees will gain knowledge into the utilization of cutting edge XML XML

Markup language developed to be a simplified and more structural version of SGML. It incorporates features of HTML (e.g., hypertext linking), but is designed to overcome some of HTML's limitations.
and Java technologies for Web application development, while receiving all the benefits of the Java 2 Platform, including ease of use, portability, performance, reusability and security. Session topics covered include presentation layer, XML, Web services, dynamic graphics, scalability and performance.

Web Services (29 sessions, 18 BOFs)

Java technology-based API's and programming models applicable for developing Web services and how to effectively use them will be covered in-depth. Attendees will learn how to build Web services based on synchronous or asynchronous Refers to events that are not synchronized, or coordinated, in time. The following are considered asynchronous operations. The interval between transmitting A and B is not the same as between B and C. The ability to initiate a transmission at either end.  styles of messaging, how to assemble multiple Web services into business process flows, and how to successfully integrate Web services with existing legacy applications.

Java Technology on the Desktop (17 sessions, 14 BOFs)

This topic, a must-attend for desktop Java technology developers ranging from novice to advanced expertise, will cover GUI (Graphical User Interface) A graphics-based user interface that incorporates movable windows, icons and a mouse. The ability to resize application windows and change style and size of fonts are the significant advantages of a GUI vs. a character-based interface.  and graphics-related technologies that support Java applets and applications. Attendees will learn what is happening in the Java(TM) Foundation Classes technology ("JFC/Swing"), AWT (Abstract Windowing Toolkit) A class library from Sun that provides an application framework and graphical user interface (GUI) routines for Java programmers. AWT was the first user interface development system included in the Java Foundation Classes (JFC). , 2D, Globalization globalization

Critical deployment technologies and media-related topics will also be covered, as well as the benefits of deploying Java technology-based applications to the desktop using Java Network Launching Protocol and API (JSR-56) and Java Web Start A mechanism from Sun for delivering full-blown Java applications from a Web server. The programs are initially downloaded using the browser, but run outside of the browser. Contrast with Java applets, which require an open browser window to stay active.  software.

Java Technology Products and Success Stories (28 sessions, 22 BOFs)

This exciting topic will feature Java technology products from leading vendors, including those who can help developers improve their own projects, as well as in-depth technical investigations of success stories directly from developers and organizations using Java technology.

Advanced Networking Technologies (20 sessions, 17 BOFs)

A variety of advanced networking technologies, including Jini(TM), "Project JXTA (JuXTApose) Pronounced "jux-tah," it is an open source protocol for peer-to-peer computing originally developed by Sun.
