As reported on Page 1 of this week's Business Journal, coffee shops in Koreatown charge as much as $7 per cup. High prices at Starbucks and comparable chains have always baffled those used to paying a buck for their coffee in a more traditional American diner-style establishment. So the Business Journal asks:

Why do people pay such high prices for a cup of coffee?

I wouldn't normally pay that much for a cup of coffee unless there was something experiential attached to it. If it was at a shop where there was a musician playing, or art being shown, and the extra money went directly to the artist, then I would be inclined to pay more. I believe this is more of an entertainment thing, rather than about the coffee.

I understand that a lot of people hold meetings or do work on their computers at these stores, and they can stay there for hours.  taste better than regular coffee--it's much stronger in flavor. That's why I do buy their coffee once in a while, but I would never go every day. The lines are way too long, and I just don't have the time to wait in line every day for my morning coffee. Also, I'm not willing to spend five dollars a day on a cup of coffee.

People may be willing to spend more for a cup of coffee for the ambience, the experience, and because it is still a relatively cheap indulgence indulgence, in the Roman Catholic Church, the pardon of temporal punishment due for sin. It is to be distinguished from absolution and the forgiveness of guilt. The church grants indulgences out of the Treasury of Merit won for the church by Christ and the saints. . If someone is paying only seven dollars to spend an hour inside the coffee shop, it is still cheaper than other forms of entertainment. Coffee shops such as Starbucks are also a good common ground for short, informal meetings.

A combination of brilliant marketing, convenience and the growing number of single-parent and/or single households is what makes this coffee so appealing. My morning half-caffe latte is a luxury and a convenience, since I would not make a whole pot of coffee for just myself. Also, as a native Seattlite raised on coffee, it is required that I participate in this phenomenon. So I bought stock, which eases my conscience.

Gourmet coffee has become a daily ritual and addiction of convenience--Starbuck's has become synonymous with synonymous with
adjective equivalent to, the same as, identical to, similar to, identified with, equal to, tantamount to, interchangeable with, one and the same as
both. Therefore people are willing to pay a premium for an indulgence that might set them back a little more.
